How Often to Use a Derma Roller & Look Years Younger

We always want to look young! In this guide, you will learn all the pertinent information on how often to use derma roller to look younger without having to pay top dollar.

A lot of women (and men too) have tried dermarolling as an effective alternative in getting rid of different signs of ageing. Also known as Microneedling, dermarolling is a skin therapy that promotes collagen production to repair any damaged skin. It uses a derma roller with hundreds or thousands of microneedles ranging from size 0.2mm to 1.0mm that are safe for home use and size 1.5mm to 3.0mm for professional use which are only done by dermatologists or trained aestheticians.

Every time a derma roller is rolled onto the skin surface, it creates micro wounds and channels that trigger the production of new collagen. Collagen plays an important role in keeping our skin beautiful and young-looking. You will get a lot of beauty benefits from dermarolling such as:

  • Better absorption of beauty products to make it more beneficial and potent to the skin
  • Maintain a healthy, supple and firmer skin due to its ability to promote collagen production
  • Reduce wrinkles and fine lines and make it appear less visible
  • Reduce acne and scarring
  • Reduce stretch marks and cellulites
  • Reduce deep and stubborn scars
  • Improved appearance of skin when used regularly
  • Repair sun damage, age spots, hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration
  • Get plumped and fuller lips
  • Promote hair growth for receding hairline, thinning hair, and baldness

What Makes Dermarolling a Choice for Many

Affordable and effective. Derma rolling is affordable and targets multiple skin imperfections. With the regular use of a derma roller, you can resolve multiple skin problems in every session without having to undergo invasive and expensive treatments.

Fits perfectly to your daily routine. There is little to no down time after using a derma roller (only the sizes that are recommended for home use). You do not have to wait for long days to get back to your daily routine.

Convenient and safe home treatment. Derma rolling is a safe home treatment. You can finish one session for as quickly as 5-15 minutes. You do not have to set your appointment with your derma clinic because you can conveniently do it as part of your beauty regimen at home before you take your beauty rest.

How Often to Use a Derma Roller

A derma roller is not for daily use. To get desirable results, you must follow the recommended frequency of use for every derma roller size.

Derma rollers should be used properly by following the recommended frequency of use to ensure great results. Ideally, one session every two weeks is advisable because it can bring healing and recovery to the skin as well as getting very good outcome in the part or body area that has been treated. You can choose any day of the week for your derma rolling session so you can set a fixed day for your treatment or you can follow this schedule:

Proper Technique of Using a Derma Roller

Use the 4-Direction Technique. For each section, complete dermarolling in 4 different directions as shown in the diagram below. Start by derma rolling up and down 4 times, followed by left and right 4 times, followed by diagonally top right to bottom left 4 times and lastly diagonally top left to bottom right 4 times. After that, you can move on to another section and do the same steps.

BEFORE Derma Rolling Reminders:

1. Sanitize and clean your derma roller. You must sanitize your derma roller by soaking it for 5-10minutes using a disinfectant alcohol. Clean the handles by wiping them using a wet cloth with an alcohol.

2Cleanse your face/body and hands. Wash your face or body parts to be treated with gentle cleansers and refrain from scrubbing or exfoliating before the treatment. Rub some alcohol into your hands and even the handles of your derma roller to ensure you are not transferring germs into your skin that can cause infection.

3. No dermarolling on active acne. You must avoid big, inflamed, and painful cysts. Allow it to heal before you do this treatment.

4. Dermaroll at Night Time. Unless you are not going anywhere during day time, derma rolling is best done at night. Your face can get the proper rest and recovery time when you sleep. You will notice a different kind of glow as soon as you wake up the next morning. Your skin is more plumped and brighter because the products that you put on were deeply absorbed after the treatment.

5. Apply numbing cream (optional). A microneedle with a length of above 1.0 mm leaves pinpoint bleeding when they touch the dermis and can cause discomfort to some people. If you have a low pain tolerance, you can use a numbing cream. Follow carefully all the instructions in the product insert. It needs 30mins to 1 hour of soaking into your face before the cream works.

AFTER Derma Rolling Reminders:

1. Sanitize AGAIN and clean your derma roller. You must sanitize your derma roller by soaking it for 5-10minutes using a disinfectant alcohol, let it air dry, and keep in the storage box. Do not leave it on your sinks or dresser to avoid germs or bacteria from getting into the micro needles and the roller head.

2. Apply a serum. It is recommended to put a serum within an hour after your treatment because it is the advantageous time for the skin care product to penetrate deeply into the skin layers. Dermarolling boosts the absorption of these products so don’t forget this very important step.

3Do not wash your face right away. After derma rolling, you must put a moisturizer (if you don’t want to use a serum) to calm and relax your face. If you have a dry or sensitive skin, it is highly suggested to refrain from using toners and cream with peeling effects after the treatment.

4. Always wear sunblock cream. It is very necessary to put sunscreen protection with the highest SPF to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that cause skin damage like age spots and hyperpigmentation.

USEFUL TIP: Take a Photo of Your Before and After

If you want to see how well your skin is improving, you may want to take a photo of your face and compare the results after each treatment. Just remember to remove the camera filters!

If you presently have one of these skin conditions, do not use a derma roller treatment:

  • Hypersensitive skin
  • Open wounds and raised scars
  • Active breakouts and acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea or Skin inflammation
  • Warts and moles
  • Fungal infection
  • Sunburn
  • Abnormal skin disease
  • Flaky or scaly skin
  • History of blood clotting

Recommended Skin Products to Use when Dermarolling:

  • Vitamin C Serums – It is a powerful antioxidant that stimulates collagen production so you’ll get brighter and firmer skin. It also aids to hasten the healing process when the skin is wounded. Just use enough amounts to cover the whole face area and do not double the quantity to avoid over-redness and irritation that would trigger painful peeling.
  • Hyaluronic Acid- It is called the “moisture-binding ingredient” that lubricates the skin. This powerful essence provides hydration up to the deep skin layers. Your skin can be softer and moisturized since it locks up the water that is important in keeping your skin healthy 24hours. This is perfect for those with itchy and dry skin. You’ll be surprised to see how your skin looks- plumped and with silky smooth finish.
  • Retinol creams and moisturizer- Retinol stimulates blood flow and collagen production so you’ll get tighter pores. It also improves the texture of the scars by making it softer and less visible. If you are prone to pimples, it will help with everything from acne to dark spots.
  • Snail creams and serums – Snail creams are a hot trend right now in the beauty section. Coming from Korea, this cream made up of snail slime promotes skin regeneration; helps prevent acne breakouts, and reduce the appearance of scars. This is a hot-selling product in Asia and is now becoming popular in the UK and US.
  • Sunscreen protection- After treatment, your skin will be sensitive to sunlight and can get burned if you stay long under the sun. A very good sunscreen will not only protect it from the harmful rays but will also keep you from getting darks spots or hyperpigmentation. Get the ones with the highest SPF and apply as needed for maximum protection.
