Is Derma Roller for Scars Removal Effective

Can a derma roller for scars be your effective solution to scar removal?

Nowadays, the use of derma roller to treat several skin problems is becoming a number one choice for many because of its benefits and effectiveness.

From simple to deep scarring, Dermarolling therapy or also called as Microneedling, is a skin renewal process wherein a derma roller full of hundreds or thousands of microneedles is rolled on the surface of the skin to trigger the body’s natural healing process.

These microneedles create micro injuries to the skin resulting to the stimulation and production of collagen.

Collagen is responsible for making our skin elastic, beautiful, and younger looking. Problem is, as we age, our collagen supply decreases so we see and experience signs of aging in our face and body.

What Skin Imperfections Can be Treated by a Derma Roller?

If you have any of these skin conditions, a Derma Roller can be used to treat it:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Shallow Acne Scars
  • Deep Scars
  • Open or big skin pores
  • Skin Discoloration
  • Age Spots
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Loose/Sagging Skin
  • Hair Loss
  • Stretch Marks
  • Cellulites

In this guide, we will discuss how a derma roller for scars becomes effective when used regularly. You may agree that at some point in your life, you got a scar probably due to childhood activities or minor accidents, simple to severe burns, acne scarring, other skin trauma or injuries that left a mark on your skin. A small or unnoticeable scar is not a big deal; however, for scars that cause embarrassment or frustration need to be treated.

Scars may fade in time or change the way it looks depending on how we address it. We usually get scars in every part of our bodies that are exposed such as the arms, legs, face, and neck. Scarring occurs as part of the body’s natural healing process after an injury. When a wound is present, your body works double time to heal and close it. Because of this “double time” process going on, the collagen produced by the body does not align properly, so the appearance of the skin after the wound healing becomes a scar. When there’s too much collagen, the scar is raised and when there’s little collagen produced, it looks indented. Now, look at your skin and see if you have raised or indented scars and learn how to fix it with the use of a derma roller.

This is how a derma roller works– Following a technique, you roll it onto your skin’s surface with gentle pressures. When these microneedles prick the skin, they create small wounds or punctures that allow skin regeneration and collagen formation. With regular dermarolling, a damaged skin can recover because of the continuous promotion of collagen and elastin. If you use it on scars, it will break up the scar tissue so that when the skin heals, the appearance of the scar will never be the same.

What are the Types of Scars that a Derma Roller Can Treat?

To set your expectation when using a derma roller for scars treatment, multiple and continuous sessions are required to see desirable results. What a derma roller does is to heal and repair the scarring, so you’ll get a better and improved appearance of your scars that can soon fade in time. It will significantly and obviously make the skin look softer and toned so the scars can either be unnoticeable or less visible.

First, let’s enumerate and identify the different types of scars:

Keloid Scars– this scars resulted from an irregular fibrous tissue formed at the site of a scar or injury. When the body tries to repair itself aggressively after wounding, you will get raised scars due to overproduction of collagen.

Atrophic Scars– Remember your chicken pox scars? This is what an atrophic scar is- when there’s not enough tissue to fill out the skin, it leaves a pitted scar. It is the same type of scar that you get from cystic acne inflammations.

Contracture Scars– This is the type of scar caused by burns, particularly severe burns. When a part of your skin is lost during the burn, your skin contracts tightly and forms this mark.

Acne Scars– the aftermath of your acne inflammation. These scars can be shallow, deep, and can cover a wide area on your face. For complete information and guidelines on how to treat acne scars with a derma roller, please see this article.

Depending on the severity, a derma roller can help with all types of scars mentioned above except for keloid scars. Since this condition is already formed due to excessive production of collagen, dermarolling it would make the condition even worse. You may shrink a keloid scar using a dermapen but it will not completely disappear and treating it forcibly can result to infections. You still have to go through some series of other treatments that are recommended by your dermatologist. For safety reasons, do not cure keloids on your own.

How to Treat Scars using Derma Roller

We recommend that you follow this Dermarolling technique on your scars. By doing so, you will get the best experience and benefits of a derma roller.

1. Sanitize and clean your derma roller. You must sanitize your derma roller before using by soaking it for 5-10minutes using a disinfectant alcohol. Clean the handles by wiping them using a wet cloth with an alcohol.

2. Make small sections. Before you start dermarolling, divide the area into small sections of about a quarter of your palm size. It is always recommended to derma roll section by section to fully cover the desired area to be treated.

3. Use the 4-direction technique. For each section, complete dermarolling in 4 different directions as shown in the diagram below. Then, derma roll up and down 4 times, followed by left and right 4 times, followed by diagonally top right to bottom left 4 times and lastly diagonally top left to bottom right 4 times. After that, you can move on to another section and do the same steps.

Recommended Derma Roller Size

When treating scars, it is important to determine whether it’s superficial, stubborn, or deep scars. There are two recommended dermaroller sizes that are safe for home use. If you are treating mild to moderate scars, you have to use Size 0.5mm; while stubborn, severe and deep scars can be treated with a Dermapen or Dermaroller Size 1.0mm. If you are treating small areas like the face and neck, you can get those dermarollers with 540-600 microneedles. For bigger areas of the body like arms, hands, legs, or tummy (stretch marks), you can get a wider roller with 1200 microneedles.

Dermarolling Schedule for Scars Treatment

Derma Roller 0.5mm can be used once to twice every 2 weeks while Derma Roller or a Dermapen 1.0mm can be used once every 2 weeks. It is important to keep a good schedule if you want to see visible results in little time. For first time users, you can start with one session every 14 days after each treatment.

You can choose any day of the week for your derma rolling session so you can set a fixed day for your treatment. Also, we encourage that you join our community of women who have committed Thursdays as our Derma Roller day.

Before & After Results

Safety Reminders When Using Derma Rollers for Scars:

BEFORE Treatment Reminders:

  1. Sanitize your derma roller. You must sanitize your derma roller before using it by soaking it for 5-10minutes using a disinfectant alcohol. Clean the handles by wiping them using a wet cloth with an alcohol. Do not wipe the microneedles with a facial tissue to so the fibres won’t stick to it.
  2. Use your own derma roller. Never use someone else’s derma roller or lend your own. It is only for PERSONAL use.
  3. Check the microneedles. If you rusts or stains, bended or broken needles, dispose the derma roller immediately. Using a damaged and defective derma roller will cause harm to your skin.
  4. Cleanse your face/body and hands. Wash your face or body parts to be treated with gentle cleansers and refrain from scrubbing or exfoliating before the treatment. Rub some alcohol into your hands and even the handles of your derma roller to ensure you are not transferring germs into your skin that can cause infection.
  5. Check your skin condition. You should not use a derma roller when you have the following conditions:

You must avoid ACTIVE acne such as big, inflamed, and painful cysts. Allow it to heal before you do this treatment.

X   Fresh wounds or burns

X  Present skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, hypersensitive skin, on warts and moles, flaky or scaly skin, fungal infections, and abnormal skin diseases. CONSULT with your dermatologist first

X   Any history of blood clotting or diabetic condition

6. Apply numbing cream (optional). A microneedle with a length of above 1.0   mm leaves pinpoint bleeding when they touch the dermis and can cause discomfort to some people. If you have a low pain tolerance, you can use a numbing cream. Follow carefully all the instructions in the product insert. It needs 30mins to 1 hour of soaking into your face before the cream works.

DURING Treatment Reminders:

  1. Roll gently. Avoid pressing the derma roller too hard on your skin. Use the same pressure for all parts and take some 30-second pause before working on another section.
  2. No over-rolling. You do not need to repeat rolling after the first round as soon as you finish the whole area to be treated. When you roll aggressively and too much, the collagen can be broken down instead of forming and regenerating new tissues.
  3. Part the skin hairs. If you are rolling in hairy parts like the arms and legs, try to avoid the hair to knot with the mirconeedles. The needles are very sensitive and could break or bend if it gets tangled with hairs.
  4. Use only the recommended size. Do not use longer microneedle other than the recommended sizes as they are harmful to skin and not for home use. Longer microneedles are only to be administered by trained professionals.
  5. Change your derma roller. If you notice that the microneedles are dull and hard to roll, they must be replaced. For effective and efficient derma rolling experience, change your derma rollers after 3-4 uses. They have a short life span and cannot be used over and over.

AFTER Treatment Reminders:

  1. Sanitize AGAIN and clean your derma roller. You must sanitize your derma roller by soaking it for 5-10minutes using a disinfectant alcohol, let it air dry, and keep in the storage box. Do not leave it on your sinks or dresser to avoid germs or bacteria from getting into the microneedles and the roller head.
  2. Apply a serum or topical products. It is recommended to put a serum or skin care products within an hour after your treatment because it is the advantageous time for the skin care product to penetrate deeply into the skin layers. Dermarolling boosts the absorption of these products so don’t forget this very important step.
  3. Do not wash the treated area right away. Let your skin recover for a few hours after the treatment. After derma rolling, you must put a moisturizer (if you don’t want to use a serum) to calm and relax the treated area. If you have a dry or sensitive skin, it is highly suggested to refrain from using toners and cream with peeling effects after the treatment if you have treated scars on your face and neck.
  4. Always wear sunblock cream. It is very necessary to put sunscreen protection with the highest SPF to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays that cause skin damage like age spots and hyperpigmentation.
  5. Track the improvement. If you want to see how well your scar is improving, you may want to take a before and after photo of the treated area and compare the results after each treatment. Just remember to remove the camera filters.
